Hopes to save a humpback whale stranded off Germany’s northern coast have run out after more than a week trying to rescue it.
 
The whale became stuck on a sandbank in March before being rescued days later – only to swim into shallow waters further down the Baltic Sea coast.
 
Head of the German Oceanographic Museum Burkard Baschek said he was of the “firm opinion” the animal would die on a shallow bay and it was “cruel to try” coax him out.
 
Rescuers had “tried everything to give him a chance” and called the situation "an exceptional tragedy", local environment minister Till Backhaus said.
