Selena Lopez’s ’21 determined and hard-fought journey to a college degree honored her immigrant father's epic work ethic. Lopez earned her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education in December 2021, tragically just one month after her father passed away. 

Working part-time while in school and even taking a brief hiatus to give birth to her son, Armani, Selena’s path wasn’t easy, but it was her father’s sacrifices that always kept her motivated. 

"My dad did everything he could to bring us to this country to have a better opportunity, so I always kept that in mind," she said. "He was always so proud of me.”

Before enrolling at St. Ambrose to study Education, Jayden Rogers’ ’23 struggles with test anxiety threatened to end his dream of playing college football and earning a degree. But it was the compassion and determination of @fightingbeesfb head coach Vince Fillip that kept him motivated to succeed and to pay it forward to students along the way. 

"I lacked confidence before I got to St. Ambrose," he said. "I needed reassurance. So, I will try and feed that back into these kids."

College was a goal Jacob Le’s ’23 parents, who immigrated to the United State from Vietnam, always encouraged. In fact, it was his mother who encouraged him to pursue a major most would say is more practical, but allowed him to continue fostering his passion for music. Now enrolled in the St. Ambrose nursing program, Le plans to pursue doctoral degrees as a nurse practitioner and medical researcher.

"I attribute my success to my mom and dad," Jacob said. "I think every parent raised in difficult circumstances wants that for their children."
