[Slide for David Bednar’s two saves this weekend!]

It’s wild how many closers the Yankees have gone through since Aroldis Chapman gave up those postseason homers against Jose Altuve and Mike Brosseau in back-to-back years. Chapman started showing signs of that glass jaw in 2021, and a year later, he lost his job to Clay Holmes. Holmes was awesome until he wasn’t.

Weaver took over for him in 2024 and helped the Yankees reach the World Series. Then, last year, closer was a hot potato between Weaver and Devin Williams until David Bednar took the job.

Bednar seems like he lives dangerously, just as those guys have, and that wasn’t more apparent than in the WBC and in his most recent save, but I give him credit for not flinching. It’s one of his best features, outside of that high heat he throws and a nasty. Here’s to hoping he keeps the job for a year and is wildly successful.
