During the Second World War, an Austrian Jewish child named Eric Schwam was hidden with his family in the French village of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, where residents quietly protected thousands of Jews from German persecution. He remained there until 1950, later studying pharmacy and building a life he might never have had without the village’s help.

When Schwam died in 2020 at the age of 90, he left more than €2 million to the village, asking that it be used for education and youth programs.

The town had long been recognized for its actions, receiving praise from Barack Obama in 2009 and being honored by Yad Vashem as “Righteous Among the Nations,” making Schwam’s final gift a powerful act of gratitude rather than a surprise.
