PTSD and migraine aren’t just coexisting conditions, they’re deeply connected in ways that can impact both physical and emotional health. 💜

Research shows that people living with migraine are 3–4x more likely to experience PTSD compared to those without headache disorders. And in clinical settings, up to 30% of people with migraine meet criteria for PTSD, highlighting just how common this overlap is.

Here’s what’s important to understand:
* Trauma exposure is more common in people with migraine, and many report multiple traumatic life events. * PTSD symptoms often appear before the onset of frequent or severe migraine, suggesting a possible role in triggering or worsening attacks. * Both conditions share underlying biological pathways—including stress response (HPA axis), nervous system dysfunction, and inflammation. * When PTSD and migraine occur together, they’re linked to greater disability and impact on daily life. * Women are disproportionately affected by both conditions, though the connection exists across genders

This connection is a reminder that migraine is not “just a headache”, it’s a complex neurological disease often intertwined with mental health and lived experiences.

Treating both matters. Addressing trauma and mental health (like PTSD) may help improve overall migraine outcomes. If this resonates with you, you’re not alone and your experience is valid.
