THE DISAPPEARED - EPISODE 4
New York, 1898. This is Sophia. She’s 28. And she’s been committed to an asylum for inheriting money.
Sophia’s father dies. Leaves her his entire estate. Forty thousand dollars. A fortune. She wants to invest it herself. Manage her own finances.
Her husband says no.
Under coverture law, everything she owns belongs to him. But the will names her specifically. He needs her signature to access the money.
She refuses to sign.
He calls two doctors. They examine her for twenty minutes. Diagnosis: “Delusional about financial matters.” Evidence: Believes she’s capable of managing money. Clearly insane.
Private asylum.
Sophia is kept heavily sedated. Declared legally incompetent. Her husband signs the papers. Takes control of everything.
He spends forty thousand dollars in three years.
Horses. Gentleman’s clubs. Real estate. European travel. Stock investments.
Her inheritance. Gone.
Fifteen years pass.
The money’s gone. She’s suddenly no longer useful to him. But she’s still declared incompetent. Still committed. Still imprisoned.
She dies in the asylum at forty-three. Fifteen years for wanting to manage her own inheritance.
New York, 1898-1913.
When a woman managing money was diagnosed as delusion. When inheriting a fortune could disappear you for life. When coverture law + commitment law = legal robbery.
Hundreds of women committed when husbands wanted their money. Diagnosed with “financial delusion,” “property mania,” “inheritance insanity.”
Most died in asylums while husbands spent their fortunes.
This was legal.
Drop a 🔒 for Sophia and the disappeared.
This is Episode 4 of “The Disappeared: Committed for Being Inconvenient” — the people who were legally committed to asylums for being inconvenient, disobedient, or threatening to power.
Previous episodes:
• Episode 1: The Reluctant Bride (refused marriage)
• Episode 2: The Reader (read too many books)
• Episode 3: The Suffragist (demanded votes)
• Episode 4: The Inheritance (inherited money)
When disagreeing was diagnosed. When refusing was illness. When being inconvenient was insanity.
