You’ve probably spent more time planning your last holiday than you have planning the 30 years after you stop working.
That sounds harsh. But it’s true for most people I work with.
Ask someone what they want to do in retirement and you’ll usually hear the same things: travel, spend time with the grandchildren, play a bit of golf or pickleball.
There’s nothing wrong with any of that. But it’s not a plan. It’s a wish list with no detail.
One of my clients told me she wanted to “finally have time to enjoy life.” When I asked her what a typical Tuesday would look like in retirement, she went quiet. She hadn’t thought about it.
That’s surprisingly common. People spend more time planning a two-week holiday than they do planning a retirement that might last 30 years.
I always tell my clients: retirement has three phases. The active years, where you’ve got energy and want to do everything. The slowing-down years, where your priorities shift. And the later years, where health and support become the focus. Each one needs thinking about differently.
But it starts with something simple. What does a great week actually look like for you once you stop working?
Not the big dreams. The everyday stuff. What time do you get up? What do you do on a Wednesday afternoon? Who do you see? What gives you a reason to get out of bed?
One of my clients calls the early retirement years the “go-go years.” I love that. Because that’s exactly what they should be - full of energy and purpose.
But only if you’ve actually thought about what you’re going to do with them.
