Ancient Egypt lasted for over 3,000 years, starting around 3100 BCE when King Narmer unified the Nile Valley. This long timeline is divided into the Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms, separated by periods of instability. The civilization was incredibly stable because the Nile River provided predictable food and wealth. For many centuries, the culture, religion, and writing remained almost the same. By the time Cleopatra ruled, the earliest pyramids were already ancient ruins to the people living there.
