PROJECT UPDATE: Canyon Creek Mushrooms

Growing Mushrooms in the Desert

You may have heard of the Coachella Valley for its epic music festival, but one company hopes that it also becomes known for its delicious local mushrooms.

Last fall, Canyon Creek Mushrooms partnered with Steward to receive a $100,000 business loan to expand their sustainable production facility. Despite supply chain delays, skyrocketing materials costs (lumber up 300-400% pre-COVID), and the impacts of rising inflation, they have still managed to scale production.

One of their solutions, while they await moving into their permanent grow facility, was to build out a series of temporary growing tents that can be used to add incubation, fruiting, and lab space quickly and affordably. But rising costs have meant that Canyon Creek has had to put some of the planned equipment on hold for now, hoping to revisit soon as operating revenue grows.

Despite these setbacks, Canyon Creek has managed to keep up with strong demand for their gourmet mushrooms, expanding production from 60lbs./week to now up to 100+ lbs./day! They currently have 13 recurring restaurant accounts and hope to have 20 by the end of this month. And whatever excess mushrooms they may have, they’ve been donating to a local food bank.

What Lies Ahead? Their most immediate need is to finish up their retail space, which they hope to open by July 4th weekend, offering on-site mushroom sales 5 days a week. They are also working on plans to add a commercial kitchen (by October) and expand their line of value-added products (e.g., dehydrated mushrooms, powders, and spice blends).
