Suffolk police arrested a Smithtown councilman and charged him with assault, after another councilman told Newsday he was attacked during the town board’s executive session.

Smithtown Councilman and Deputy Supervisor Tom McCarthy, 68, said Councilman Thomas Lohmann, 68, punched and struck him multiple times during a heated closed-door meeting in front of the town supervisor, town attorney and other council members.
