The Trump administration just announced plans to fully dismantle the US Forest Service, closing all 10 regional offices and over 50 research labs across the country. Thousands of workers are about to lose everything.

The agency already had roughly 26,260 employees as of January and had already lost 16% of its workforce in just the first year of Trump’s second term. Now with this full restructuring, total cuts are expected to reach around 10,000 jobs.

Every employee reassigned to a new location must either accept the move or lose their job. And history shows most won’t move. When the Bureau of Land Management went through a similar relocation, only 41 out of 328 employees actually relocated. Experts say the Forest Service is about to face that same reality at a much larger scale.
The US Forest Service manages 193 million acres of national forests and grasslands, oversees wildfire prevention and response, protects watersheds that supply drinking water to millions of Americans, and conducts decades of research on climate, wildlife, and natural resources.

The timing makes it even worse. A new federal wildfire forecast is already showing an exceptionally high fire risk season ahead, and the people responsible for fighting those fires are being pushed out the door.#
