The stretch of land along the Berkeley-Albany waterfront that once housed the horse racing track Golden Gate Fields is set to be transformed into a large public park.

The Trust for Public Land, a San Francisco-based nonprofit, secured an option to purchase the 161-acre site under a proposed $175 million land acquisition announced Tuesday.

“Golden Gate Fields offers a truly generational opportunity to reimagine a world-class bayside park for the Bay Area,” said Guillermo Rodriguez, vice president of the Pacific Region and California State Director, in a press release. “With the East Bay Regional Park District and a wide range of public and community partners, we have the chance to expand shoreline access, restore vital ecosystems and create a place where hundreds of thousands of residents can connect with the outdoors.”
