JoJo Siwa is setting the record straight, making it clear she’s not straight.

In a 7 April interview with Us Weekly, the 22-year-old opened up about the confusion and backlash she faced after entering a relationship with Chris Hughes last year, explaining that her identity hasn’t changed, even if her current relationship has.

“I clearly am not a straight human being. I could never say that I’m straight. Am I in a straight relationship? Yes. Am I in love with a man? Yes! Do I want to spend the rest of my life with him? Absolutely. But does that discredit my past? Absolutely not. Zero,” she said.

Siwa reflected on first coming out at 17 and emphasised that her experiences, including past relationships with women and nonbinary people, remain a core part of who she is.

She described the reaction to her current relationship as “confusing,” noting that some people who were previously supportive of her turned critical because she’s now with a man. Still, she says she’s committed to continuing to share her journey openly and advocate as a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

While she’s happy in her relationship, Siwa also leaned into broader labels that better reflect her identity, saying, “Queer, pansexual, bisexual, plus the other terms that I could name, but those three, really relate to me. And if I had to put a label on it, just to basically shut people down, yeah, I would say I’m probably pansexual.”
