My first series (on the stories behind the positive pregnancy tests) is up on yourfertilitystories. It’s so essential that we share these stories to give hope, create resources and to increase awareness on various fertility concerns and conditions that affect our communities every single day.

“My doctor must have felt guilty - because she knew that she could have just sent me for an ultrasound and I would probably still have both of my tubes. 

So she got me into a fertility clinic and placed me with a buddy of hers from her university days - who, although otherwise charming - told me that the only way I’d ever have another baby (what with my advanced maternal age (32), my poor egg quality, my low AMH and my one tube) was with IVF. 

She told me, ‘you’re going to have to do IVF anyways, don’t even waste your time with IUIs.’ 

Right off the bat my confidence was shattered. I was frantic. I kept thinking, ‘my God, this is never going to happen for me. Did you hear what the doctor said to us?’ Meanwhile my husband - who is 15 years older than me - was told again and again how amazing his sperm was. He was perfect. So all of the pressure was on me. 

The language in the fertility world is so demoralizing and you can’t help but internalize it. The psychological effect - I’m convinced - is where it falls apart. 

At every every appointment someone is telling you that you’re not good enough. You have bad egg quality. You’re a poor responder. Your lining is too thin. Your transfers failed. You are failing. You’re a failure. This is never going to work. 

But at the time, I was just like, okay, this doctor is just straight up. She’s telling me like it is. It’s probably what I need. It’s a reality check.” (2/3) simply_shira
