Unfortunately, I’m just a regular acupuncturist (albeit one fairly well-versed in reproductive medicine and reproductive immunology literature).

Highlights from the Evidence:

In patients with recurrent implantation failure (RIF):

“Compared with continuous oral estrogen and traditional hormone replacement therapies, acupuncture and moxibustion demonstrated superior improvements in clinical pregnancy rates, live birth rates, endometrial thickness, endometrial morphology, and serum estradiol levels.”

In a systematic review and meta-analysis of 13 randomized controlled trials (n = 775) evaluating acupuncture for diminished ovarian reserve:

“Acupuncture demonstrated significant efficacy in reducing follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) [SMD = 0.83, 95% CI (0.27–1.39), p = 0.004], increasing estradiol (E2) [SMD = 0.50, 95% CI (0.07–0.93), p = 0.02], and improving anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels [SMD = 0.24, 95% CI (0.05–0.44), p = 0.01].”

Critically, acupuncture is increasingly conceptualized in clinical trial methodology as a dose-dependent intervention, in which therapeutic effect is determined by cumulative treatment exposure. As described in the literature:

“Treatment components such as the number of needles and the selection of acupoints contribute to the overall biological ‘dose’ of acupuncture.”

Treatment frequency, session number, and protocolized acupoint selection may therefore differentiate trials demonstrating statistically significant hormonal and endometrial changes from those that do not — particularly in reproductive populations where outcomes such as folliculogenesis, endometrial receptivity, and implantation occur across defined temporal windows.
