Conception isn't a competition.

So when you conceive...when you announce... I beg you, don't say how long it took.

"I sneeze and I'm pregnant"

"My husband just needs to look at me and I'm pregnant."

"First try."

These are statements - a dialogue - that, for some reason has been normalized and encouraged.

But here's the thing. A flippant remark - one that you'll forget in 5 minutes - will render another couple depressed; despondent; and broken.

I'm so happy that you're expecting - but I also want you to know - your first try is not the norm.

An estimated 15% of couples will have trouble conceiving. (UCLA Health, 2020)

Infertility is one of the primary reasons for divorce among couples. (International Journal of Reproductive Biomedicine, 2020)

Up to 60% of infertile individuals reported psychiatric symptoms with significantly higher levels of anxiety and depression than fertile individuals. (Clinical Therapeutics, 2014)

Nearly 41% of infertile women have depression. (BMC Women’s Health, 2004)

Almost 87% of infertile women have anxiety. (BMC Women’s Health, 2004).

These stats affect more people than you think. These are your friends. They are your family. They might even be you.

So let's change the dialogue around conception - away from competition and towards support. Because if you're expecting, that's reward enough.
