As I prep for a talk that I'm giving to the Women of Google...this post feels very fitting to re-post...

Hormonal (adjective)

1 : of, relating to, utilizing, or produced by hormones
hormonal changes

2 : markedly influenced or affected by hormones (such as sex hormones) : exhibiting behavior characteristic of increasing or fluctuating hormone levels
moody hormonal teenagers.

Samson, my son is VERY high spirited. He doesn't stop moving. His need for my attention is constant and strong.

When asked about how my children are, I typically have a new update on what Samson has injured; broken; or, destroyed...

To which the most common reply is, "it's because he's a boy. He'll be harder now...but just wait until your daughters become hormonal teenagers."

Don't be offended if this is a conversation we've had. I've said it. I've thought it.

But boys are hormonal too...

...but their hormonal shifts aren't demonized in the media and in cultural norms.

It's expected for boys to become sexual beings - it's encouraged. Our entire SEX-ED criteria is about how to facilitate safe sex...and how to AVOID getting a woman pregnant. There's no discussion about how a woman can become pregnant....*

*[...I spend my clinic days helping women identify their ovulation to try to become pregnant (a phenomenon that is actually very miraculous + challenging)].

A boy becomes a man. A girl becomes a problem....

In some cultures - women are feared and required to hide away while she bleeds. In ours, young women learn to think of themselves as unpredictable PMS "hormonal" monsters needing to be avoided and medicated...

But maybe...we aren't.

Maybe, we are simply out balance. And instead of being assessed - our nutrition; our sleep; our stress; our relationships (with others and ourselves) - we are labelled "bitches" or "psychos."

Instead of being listened to - we are medicated. Instead of being trusted - our sexuality - is feared. Instead of being encouraged to speak up - we gaslight ourselves ("Maybe my pain/cramps/bleeding/mood is all in my head")

We are not the problem. We are the solution + our hormones are our ally.
