Yesterday, I got a message (check my stories) from my 17 year old cousin garrett_p_todd - a rower - a smart jock who is very cool (and very soft spoken) - who wanted to tell me that he was inspired by my “butch” post. 17 years old - and he wanted to let his 34-year-old-mother-of-4 old cousin know that he was proud of her. // Truth. When I found out I was pregnant with Samson...I asked the ultrasound tech to check again. “I don’t make boys...are you sure?” She was sure.
I honestly didn’t know what to do. I wasn’t upset. I was just...unnerved. Yavor kept saying, “are you going to be okay....” I was okay. I was nervous. But I was so very okay.
I went to a girls school. I only had my sister. When I finished university...and got my first taste of sexual harassment (without a dad to run to) I internalized my fear of men...and it quickly turned to mistrust.
My gender has always been a badge of honour. I was - and still am - SO proud to be a woman. My earliest memories are of playing kickball at camp - boys vs. girls - and I was so amped to win. I wanted the girls to win.
But there’s no winning in gender...because gender is fluxing...and ultimately, it’s about respect. It’s about respecting humans. Not genders or the expectations of gender.
So now I have a husband, three daughters and a son. A little man who I love so much - who I know will be a force of positivity - who will help me evolve into the kind of human that I want to be. littlelionman #strongsamson
