On Mondays, we dream about the weekend. We plan vacations months ahead and miss them as soon as they’re over. Even during the vacation, we worry about it ending, counting down the days until reality returns.

Sound familiar? I’ve done the same—especially during massages, already dreading the end as soon as it began. How often do we long for something that’s passed? How often do we dream about the future, thinking it will make us happier?

But how often do we stay fully present? Those moments when you’re immersed in a book or enjoying a quiet evening by the fire. That’s living in the now.

Living in the moment isn’t just about seconds passing. It’s about embracing today. The past is gone—five minutes ago is history. The future hasn’t come yet and may never be as you expect. If today were your last, would you spend it wishing for something different?

I’m not saying ignore the future or forget the past. Plan ahead, learn from it—but don’t live there. Regretting or obsessing keeps you stuck in time that’s not now.

Why does this matter? Compare those anxious feelings of missing, regretting, or worrying with the peace that comes from living in the present. Which would you prefer?

The present is a gift. I used to think living in the moment was rare. I spent so much time worrying about the future that I poisoned my present. Now, I live in the moment more than ever.

How did I change? There’s no magic solution. Just stop. When you find yourself in the past or future, stop. Missing something that’s gone? Let it go. Dreaming about the future? Great, but enjoy the present—it’s all you have right now.

Be aware. Notice when your mind drifts and bring it back. Step two: let those feelings go. The reward is peace from living in the moment.

Even if the present is uncomfortable, don’t run from it. Your future depends on what you do now. Tomorrow is shaped by today. Want to shape your future? Start by living fully in the present.
