We often set ourselves up for disappointment by expecting too much from people, places, or experiences. When reality doesn’t match our high expectations, we feel let down. Whether it’s a restaurant, a vacation, or something we buy, even if things meet our expectations, they can still feel just “okay.”

Take Hollywood Boulevard. Many imagine it as glamorous, but when they see it in person, it feels ordinary. They’re disappointed because reality didn’t match the fantasy. On the other hand, unexpected moments—like a great street food experience or a hidden gem—often surprise us in the best way, because we had no expectations to begin with.

By letting go of expectations, we can appreciate things for what they truly are. When I visited New Zealand, I had no specific hopes, but I was blown away by its beauty. It became one of my favorite places. In contrast, a friend visited Japan with high hopes and came back disappointed because it didn’t live up to her idealized image.

In Russia, “expect nothing” can sound negative, but it doesn’t have to be. It’s about being open to experiences without imposing our own ideas on them. When we stop expecting so much from life, we reduce disappointment and find it easier to appreciate things as they are. Happiness comes more naturally when we live without expectations.
