Chef-approved Apple Pie recipe passed down from the fam in South Carolina! Even after culinary school, it’s still my go-to! 🔥

Ingredients:
6 cups Granny Smith apples, thinly sliced
 Water (enough to cover apples)
 2 tsp lemon juice

Filling:
 ¼ cup light brown sugar
 ½ cup granulated sugar
 1 tsp cornstarch
 ¼ tsp cinnamon
 ½ tsp nutmeg
 Pinch of cloves
 Pinch of salt
 2 caps vanilla

Assembly:
 ½ stick butter, sliced
light brown sugar (about a handful)
 2 pie crusts

Egg Wash:
 1 egg yolk
 1 tsp water

Directions:
Prep the apples: Slice 6 cups of Granny Smith apples and place them in cold water with 2 tsp of lemon juice to prevent browning.
Make the filling: Whisk together the brown sugar, white sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, salt, and vanilla until fully combined.
Combine: Drain and thoroughly dry the apples, then toss them in the filling mixture until every slice is coated.
Assemble the pie: Lay the first pie crust in your pie dish, add the apple mixture, dot the top with slices of butter, and sprinkle on a handful of the brown sugar.
Top the pie: Place the second crust on top—either create a lattice or lay it whole and cut four vents (like the face of a clock at 12, 3, 6, and 9)—and crimp the edges to seal. Cover the crust edges with foil.
Egg wash: Mix 1 egg yolk with 1 tsp of water and brush it over the top and center of the crust (not the edges).
Bake: Place the pie on a baking sheet and bake at 375°F for 40 minutes with the foil on the edges, then remove the foil and bake for another 20 minutes (until everything is golden brown)
Rest: Let the pie rest for at least 1.5 hours before slicing so the filling can fully set.
