Here’s how to renovate your home on a budget yourself (even if you don’t have any DIY experience) 🔨 

Keith and Sophie were in a pickle. Their basement was trashed from previous renters, but they didn’t have $30k to throw at it to pay a contractor to renovate it. 

So my mother-in-law and I decided to teach them how to DIY the renovation themselves, despite them having never used power tools before, with a budget of only $3k.

And lemme tell you, the before pics are scary. Like really scary.

But to truly appreciate how far this basement has come, the pics don’t even do it justice…

There was bunny poop/vomit all over the carpets, a smell that wouldn’t go away, marks on the walls, trash everywhere… and yet here we are after all of that. 

And for only $3,095. Yup, that’s it.

Now does this count the couch, tv, or decor? No obviously not - I didn’t include things they would take with them when they move out. 

But this DOES count every little screw, nail, piece of wood, etc. that will remain in this home for years to come 💪

Here’s the full breakdown:

💰 $1,115 for all the IKEA bookcase/cabinets for the built-ins and bar
💰 $300 for paint
💰 $300 for the concrete forms, concrete mix, and sealer
💰 $130 for the shiplap
💰 $750 for the flooring**
💰 $500 for miscellaneous (wood, cabinet hardware, trim, screws, nails, caulk, etc.)

** now let’s address the elephant in the room 🐘

Did we receive the flooring for free from Hewn Flooring? Yes.

Is it worth more than $750 for the 400 sqft? Also, yes.

But with that said, I worked hard to find quality flooring that would give you the same look and functionality (floating floor install & waterproof) for a cheaper price. 

And that flooring is by LL Flooring in the color Woodley Oak and is only $1.89/sqft. So while we got ours for free, we didn’t need to for the budget.

Keith and Sophie had no idea how to use power tools before and now look at what they’ve helped build!
