This is my insane shower make-over in collaboration with opiadesign.sa using the ancestor of all tiles - the Zellige. Hand-hewn, baked in kilns and hand chiseled to size in Morocco, no short cuts here! Below is the low-down on just how special these Zelliges are:

5 interesting facts about Zellige 🌱

1. “Zellige” is a glazed terracotta tile; hand-hewn, baked in traditional wood ovens (kilns) and hand chiseled to-size, using the Miocene clay – a clay that can only be found in the Fez region of Morocco.

2. Morocco recently required that true zellige tiles must be made from the Miocene clay that has no lime or iron, both of which can damage the tiles, and must be labelled accordingly. That clay, coupled with the process, is what gives the high resistance, movement to the tile and unique light reflection.
3. No two tiles are similar! A zellige “is never quite the same, or quite different than its neighbour”. In essence, there is no anecdote, only a very old technique, very artisanal and perfectly illustrative of all the manufacturing defects that industrialisation has sought to eliminate.

4. It’s the ancestor of all tiles. The art of zellige flourished at the Hispano-Moresque period (Azulejo) throughout the 10th century; but the art remained very limited in use until the 14th century when other colors were introduced.

5. The prized but dying art of making zellige is passed from generation to generation. But even as it’s having a resurgence in interiors, it’s a dying craft because making traditional zelliges, requires natural clay mixed with water, hand-shaped and air-dried. In the 2nd phase, enamel glazing is applied to the fronts of the tiles by hand before being kiln-fired. The last phase is the shape cutting of each tile, by hand, one at a time!
