Okay, Mama. Let’s get real about tantrums.

That screaming, kicking, and crying can send us from zero to one hundred in a split second. We’ve all been there, but we don’t have to get swept away by the storm. We can learn to regulate our own emotions so we can be the calm our kids need.

Here’s a 3-step process to regulate your emotions during a tantrum:

1. Pause and breathe.
The second you feel that flush, that clenching in your jaw, it’s your cue to pause. Don’t say or do anything. Just take a deep breath. Inhale for four counts, hold for four, and exhale for four. This simple act tells your nervous system to chill out. It creates a tiny bit of space between the trigger and your reaction.

2. Acknowledge your feelings.
Now, check in with yourself. Instead of focusing on what your child is doing, focus on what you’re feeling. Silently say, “I’m feeling frustrated,” or “I’m feeling angry.” Naming your emotion takes away some of its power. You can look at it instead of being consumed by it.

3. Choose your response.
You’ve paused and you’ve named your feeling. Now you’re in a much better position to choose how to respond. You can decide what’s best for both of you. Maybe it’s calmly saying, “I’m going to take a moment in the other room,” or maybe it’s just sitting with them quietly. You are choosing a conscious response, not a knee-jerk reaction.

Remember, the goal isn’t perfection; it’s progress. You’re learning to lead with intention, not just emotion.
