I hate the phrase “HR isn’t your friend.”

But after 10+ years in HR, here’s the truth: HR is actually not your friend. But neither is Bob in Sales, or Annie in Marketing, or Jim in Engineering. 🤷🏾‍♀️

At the end of the day, we’re all employees. Your coworkers aren’t your friends…they’re employees just like you.

HR leaders advocate for employees all day, but the business signs everyone’s checks. Which means the final call almost always comes from senior leadership, not HR.

That was always my biggest frustration in corporate.  No matter how much I advocated for an employee, it was still up to someone else. It’s also why I started @hrbpconsulting, so I could work with founders who actually want to invest in their people and culture.
