The greatest gift is being reminded you’re not alone.

The Giving Tree has been stitched into our family story for as long as I can remember. Georgie read it when he was so little. That sweet, perfect tiny voice reading a story that means so much. We played the video of him reading it at his service, and it somehow became both a lullaby and a lifeline.

The first time I went to visit him at his resting place, I was held up by my friends. We were also in the middle of deciding if we would be moving into the house we bought before he passed, trying to do the practical things in the middle of the impossible ones. We decided we wanted to. We wanted to be in the home he helped pick. Where he picked his room…I needed to mail a check to our contractor, and I asked the girls to drop me at a post office to buy a stamp.

I walked in almost zombie like. The woman behind the counter asked what stamps I wanted. She said, “we have beautiful flowers… or we have The Giving Tree stamps.”

I froze. And then I cried and smiled at the same time. I whispered, “The Giving Tree please,” as the tears flowed uncontrollably. 

I immediately ran to the car. Asking everyone to go to their local post office and buy them for me. “I want them alllllll,” I screamed. And of course they were sold out everywhere. Out of all the post offices to walk into that day… it was that one. (And yes, we basically bought out eBay 😂 and everyone still sends me them when they find them 💚)

And then there was Larchmont Charter…When Georgie passed, the students read The Giving Tree to us. Another thread. Another reminder. Another “we see you.” They planted a beautiful tree in his honor. 

I can’t thank Kate & Joe enough for this thoughtful gift. I’m in awe. And maybe the biggest sign of all: they ordered it in October… and it arrived on November 4th — his birthday.

My biggest wish for everyone is that they look for the signs each day. If anything they bring a smile and a moment in the day that fills you up and allows you to take another step. And aways keep the people who truly see you, close.
