The Doheny Memorial Library, USC
A masterpiece of learning and legacy. Built in 1932 by oil magnate Edward L. Doheny Sr. in memory of his son, this Romanesque landmark remains the intellectual heart of USC. Designed by Ralph Adams Cram, its arches, mosaics, and Smeraldi-painted ceilings make it one of Los Angeles’ most exquisite architectural treasures. Beyond its beauty, the library preserves USC’s Special Collections, Cinematic Arts Library, and hosts the prestigious Scripter Awards, where literature meets film. It also honors its namesake family through the arts and culture program “Vision and Voices” in which I got to experience an incredible play about the story of the famed Doheny family, a theatrical work exploring a powerful story of power, tragedy, and resilience. Grateful to have experienced it as a guest of my dear friend and a true guardian of her family’s legacy, Alexandrina.
