Story details:

I was interning in Chicago summer of 2017
I sent a message to an alumni who was then working at BCG Chicago and I really didn’t expect anything to come out of it
I also almost didn’t send the note because I’m actually Canadian, so BCG Chicago wouldn’t have made sense anyway

But luckily for me they replied and we met in person for coffee
They offered to connect me to BCG Toronto, where I spoke with the Consultant supporting campus recruiting there
I also didn’t expect anything to come out of this

But that Consultant reached out later in the summer letting me know that accelerated recruiting was happening and that I should apply

…A few highly intense and stressful weeks of grind to apply for BCG Toronto and prepare for the interviews later…

Fast forward 6-years… I joined BCG Toronto, transferred to BCG NY, became one of the firm’s youngest managers at age 25…

I left the firm last year! But yeah, none of this would’ve happened if I didn’t click *send* that summer day while I was still exhausted and anxious af from my internship and thoughts of full-time job doom

And I know often *cold* messages do not work - that is true - you need to be *strategic and thoughtful* in how you reach out, engage with others, present yourself, and so on (see my page for many posts on networking & increasing chances of replies)

But the main message here is to encourage all to take the shot, whether it’s sending that outreach note or something else 🙂 You got this!
