You’ve probably heard this advice a million times…

“Get Security+ if you want to start a career in cybersecurity.”
But… is that still valid in 2025?

As someone who actually has Security+ (and didn’t get it as my first cert), I have thoughts. 👀

When I got my Security+ in South Africa, I was already in my second cyber job. It was a nice to have for foundational knowledge…but honestly? What moved the needle in my career were vendor-based certs, hands-on skills, and actually doing the work.

Here’s the thing:

✅ Security+ is still relevant… especially in the US, where it’s DoD-approved.
🌍 But outside the US? It really depends on your goals.

If you’re targeting cloud, IAM, SOC, offensive security or governance, you might benefit more from a cert that’s specific to that lane, after getting some experience and direction.

In 2025, what truly matters is proof of skill:
Projects, labs, networking, and aligning with your dream role.

💡So before you drop $$$ on any cert, ask:
Is this aligned with where I’m going?

👉🏽 Let me know, did you get Security+ when you were starting out?
Has it helped open doors for you?
I’d love to hear your journey.

Also… sorry if Mini Me sounds a bit British 😭 Eleven Labs hasn’t dropped a proper South African accent yet. We move! 🇿🇦

It’s not a one-size-fits-all game.
