3-year work anniversary 🎉 + 8 Lessons I’ve learned going from Big Tech to Startup first marketing hire 

I celebrated last week and can’t believe it’s already been 3 years since I went from working at LinkedIn in Chicago to a remote startup in NYC (feels more like 10 yrs lol, startup folks know) 🫣

I decided to drop everything I’ve learned as the first marketing hire at a startup, building a company and marketing org from the ground up WHILE growing my own career⬇️ 

Here are the biggest lessons the last three years taught me:

1. No one actually knows what they’re doing — even executives.
That’s why your perspective matters. Speak up.

2. ALWAYS advocate for yourself. No one will hand a promotion or raise to you. 

3. Choose learning over comfort early in your career.
The roles that stretch you the most will shape you the fastest.

4. Storytelling is everything.
From internal communication to earning budget and launching products, clear stories move work forward.

5. Visibility matters as much as impact.
Doing great work isn’t enough — you have to share it strategically.

6. Learn how the people around you operate.
Understanding how your manager and team think makes collaboration (and trust) easier.

7. The name of the company isn’t everything.
Scope, ownership, and growth matter far more than brand recognition.

8. If you want to build a brand outside your job, work somewhere that supports it.
If they don’t, they’re holding you back.

Grateful for this chapter, the people who shaped it, and everything still ahead.
