Happy holidays, everyone! 🎄
​There is something incredibly grounding about heading back to a Neighbor Island campus. As a graduate of Hawaii’s public school system myself, I know firsthand that these Media and Computer Science programs are the engines of curiosity. They were the spark for me, and seeing that same fire in the students at Kauai High School this month when I visited for an AI was a full-circle moment.

​I had the privilege of spending the day with Leah Aiwohi and her brilliant students in AP Computer Science Principles, Design Thinking, and Media. Leah is a powerhouse, and Kaua'i is so fortunate to have her leadership and vision driving these programs.

​We dove deep into AI Literacy, moving beyond just "using" tools to actually understanding the "how" and "why" behind them.

​Here is what we covered:

​The Mechanics: Using the Digital Promise framework to look under the hood of how AI actually functions.

​Rapid Prototyping: Exploring MagicSchool AI and vibe coding entire websites and apps to prototype concepts for cs projects.

​Creative Media: Pushing the boundaries of generative image and music creation in service of telling local stories. Suno & Google Labs 

​The Kuleana: Most importantly, we focused on the evaluation of these tools. We discussed the ethics of AI and how to ensure this technology is always used to benefit our communities and our islands.

​Technology moves fast, but our focus remains on the people using it. Seeing these students build, critique, and innovate gives me so much confidence in the future of Hawaii’s workforce.
