Hey Chicago! Spring is loading so I know you planning them road trips. Have you considered Shawnee National Forest? Located just a 5 hour road trip from Chicago you will find: 

The little Grand Canyon trail: located in Pomona Illinois! This hike is about 3 to 4 miles depending on the route you take. The main attraction of this trail are the canyon walls that allows for a rocky and slippery  creek bed walk. We like to call this trail hard due to the elevation, many hills and unmarked terrain. It’s easy to go off trail here so make sure you have a good map like all trails. 

Garden of the gods Trail:  a choose your own adventure trail in Herod, IL. You can drive to the parking lot to see the stunning rock towers. Or you can hike along the Indian point trail. Which is a moderate 1.7 mile trail. Last time we went it was a bunch of sliders so make sure you’re prepared for that.
