Constipation in children can be hard to recognise and it can take a long time to treat. But it can be treated.
It can be confusing because a child might be passing small amounts of poo frequently and also maybe soiling themselves. It may appear that child is doing this on purpose and is just too lazy to sit on the toilet but in the constipation child this soiling can in fact be overflow diarrhoea, there is a backlog of poo in the rectum will stretch and stretch and stretch to accommodate this backlog more fresher liquidy poo will leak down around this backlog of poo. A child has no control over this and will not feel it.

‼️if you are concerned about your child’s bowels the check in with your GP. Your child may be constipated and remember the first line in treatment for constipation in children is the use of an osmotic laxatives - fluids and diet will not treat constipation in a child. A child should pass a type 4 poo on The Bristol Stool Chart poo at least four times in the week preferably daily. There should be no effort pain or discomfort associated with having a poo.

‼️If you do a clear out- empty the rectum - please remember that constipation can reoccur. If the rectum has been impacted with poo for some time then the rectum will become stretched and baggy and lose its tone therefore the signal for the child to poo may be delayed and constipation can reoccur simply because poo is building up again on the rectum. This is why it is so important that once the rectum has been emptied that the poo is kept moving with a maintenance dose of laxative AND the child works on fluids, diet, movement and a good toileting routine & posture.
