Osmotic laxatives are the first line treatment for the management of Idiopathic Constipation in children. Macrogols are the preferred type of osmotic laxative to use as per The NICE guidelines. Sometimes a disimpaction regime is required. Your child must be reviewed by a doctor and these laxatives are prescription only. It is important to rule out an underlying cause for constipation to ensure it is treated correctly. These type of macrogols also contain electrolytes.

The macrogol molecule leaves the body virtually unabsorbed.

Macrogols can take 24-48 hours to take effect.
Always follow instructions that come with the box of powdered sachets. 

For Movicol paediatric for example you must add 62.5mls of water per sachet.
