Try this little exercise with your little one to explain where pee comes from and what we feel when need to pee. It’s a great fun way for them to understand how their body works.
Pop a balloon on the end of your tap and turn on the water.
Here’s what you can talk about…
Our kidneys produce our pee (point out on their body where their kidneys are - one on either side of our back about a third of the way up)
The pee goes from the kidneys to the bladder (via the ureters)
The pee is kept here in the bladder until we need to go for a pee
The bladder will keep filling with pee and expand much like the balloon. (This is why we feel pressure down below when we need to pee- put there hands on balloon to feel this)
The bladder has nerve endings that will send a message to the brain to say we need to go pee.
🎈(When the balloon is full take it off the tap and turn it upside down- then relax your grip on the end of the balloon and allow the water out…)
🚽 When we go to sit on the loo to pee the bladder wall will contract and the muscle (sphincter muscle that is at the base of the bladder) will relax and allow the pee out (via the urethra).

‼️TOP TIPS: We need to be as relaxed as we can to allow the pee out sitting (smaller bums will need a toilet seat insert) (blowing bubbles can help too to relax) we need to be sitting correctly (knees apart & higher than hips feet need to be on a foot stool for kids to achieve this) & sit for long enough (a sandtimer is a great visual for kids so they know how long they will need to sit for).

Make it fun and allow them to fill and empty the balloon. Who doesn’t love a bit of messy play- it’s a great way for kids to learn!
