Planning The Afternoon Expedition.
(Companion to last post: On Patrol)

Before the trike hits the streets, there’s a briefing.

Two hats. A lantern. A table covered in secret maps. The red dotted line isn’t a route...it’s a promise. Today, the neighborhood expands. The familiar becomes classified. The boring corner becomes a 'known risk.' And the puddle everyone else walks around? That’s a dimensional gateway with a suspiciously smug reflection.

The lesson here: Lighting that tells the story.

This piece lives and dies on one simple lighting idea: warm inside / cool outside.

You don’t need a complicated setup, just a clear hierarchy.

1) Pick your boss light (the lantern)
The lantern is the key light, so it gets:
the brightest values, the warmest color, the sharpest attention (faces + hands + map)

Practical move: keep the lantern glow tight. If everything is equally warm and bright, the “lantern at night” magic evaporates.

2) Give it a quiet opponent (window light) The green window is a cool fill, not a second spotlight. Low intensity, broad and soft, mostly on edges/planes facing the window (hats, shoulders, background boxes)

This contrast is what sells the mood: safe inside, unknown world outside.

3) Use falloff like a cheat code
Lantern light drops fast. So: the map + faces are bright, the room dies into shadow quickly, background stays simple (less detail, lower contrast)
If you’re unsure, throw a temporary Black & White adjustment layer on top and check: Is the focal point still the brightest thing?

4) Bounce light for “life”
A tiny bit of warm bounce from the table into chins/hands makes it feel real.
Not brighter, just warmer and slightly lifted in the shadows.

5) Save the sparkles for the end
Small specular hits = instant believability: goggles, lantern metal, glossy paper edges, hat rims, nose shine.

Think “sprinkle,” not “glaze the entire donut.”

Some architecture next.

(And yes… the dotted line is doing most of the acting.)
