🗺️🤖 Pokémon GO may have quietly helped build one of the biggest AI maps of the real world.

Over the past few years, millions of Pokémon GO players have scanned real-world locations inside the game using AR mapping tools. Most people did it to unlock in-game rewards or improve PokéStops.

But those scans ended up creating something much bigger.

Niantic says its new geospatial AI system was trained using more than 30 billion images captured from locations around the world. A large portion of that data came from players recording streets, buildings, parks, and public spaces while playing.

Each scan adds another angle of the physical world, slowly building a massive 3D visual understanding of real environments.

Now Niantic is turning that data into what it calls a Large Geospatial Model, an AI designed to understand how the real world is structured and how to move through it.

One of the first real-world uses could be delivery robots navigating cities, especially in areas where traditional GPS struggles like crowded streets, sidewalks, and complex intersections.

In other words, years of people catching Pokémon may have also helped train the next generation of real-world AI navigation.
