Take the Oldest House on De Vargas Street. Its adobe foundations may date back to the 1200s, built by Pueblo peoples long before European colonists arrived. Later, the Spanish layered their own adobe and beams on top. Inside, you’ll even find a coffin and the infamous headless skeleton of Juan Espinosa — a plaster display tied to the local legend that he was beheaded in the 1600s after buying a bad love potion from two witches. Just steps away on the Plaza stands the Palace of the Governors, built in 1610 under Spanish colonial rule. Today, it’s recognized as the oldest continuously used public building in the United States. Its adobe walls have served as a palace, fortress, Mexican command post, U.S. territorial capital, and now museum. Few buildings can claim such layered history, Indigenous, Spanish, Mexican, and American, all written into the same walls.
