If you want to understand the history of a mining town, visit its brothels. 

Welcome to the Dumas Brothel of Butte, MT, the one place in the nation with the distinct honor of saying it operated longer than any other house of ill repute. 

From 1890-1982, this single brothel was a living, throbbing display of the socioeconomic diversity of the city. Not just in their male population, but their women. The high-class women, serving the mine owners and wealthy residents, would have operated out of the top-floor suites, all with their own private corner sink. Ya know, to keep things…fresh. 

The first floor and back alley adjacent cribs would have been for the more menial men, perhaps the mine workers themselves. Then there is the basement, a labyrinth of dank cribs partitioned with sheets to service as many men as possible for the least amount of money. The final room count of services offered in the Dumas before closure was 43, far more than the architects would have ever planned on. 

TBH, I’ve waited nearly a year to release this video, simply because the history here is so layered, complicated, fascinating, and tragic. And my own personal experience here was something that took me quite a long time to try and understand. But at the end of the day, I’ve felt paralyzed on how best to honor this location and the women who worked here, knowing there was no way I could do it all justice in 3 minutes or under. So this is very much a “to be continued” and more of an introduction to this special building and the stories held within.
