What is a go to fly you have in your box?!? A fly that you may not use everytime you fish, but always have on hand….

If you are new to trout fishing on fly like me…..then you KNOW how overwhelming it can be to learn about flies when you are just trying your hardest to wade the river and make a roll cast without getting in the tree.

I hate to break it to you, but if you hope to go out on your own…without a guide & catch…you will at least need to know the basics about what fly to use in what conditions, what time of year, and at what kind of stream ( is it wild water or stocked water?). This has been an extremely long learning process for me…which is now why I’m sharing what I’ve learned as a newbie with you! 

I’ve been asked to start blogging this year & I will definitely be writing more in depth about this topic for you & sharing all I know.  Remember folks…I’m not an expert…just a fishing enthusiast who left the spin rod & the beach behind for the mountains 2 years ago. 

Back to the question I started off with! 👆I probably can name 4 flies that I will always have in my box trout fishing here in Western North Carolina.  In my years learning, I’ve come to find that a prince nymph typically gets the job done year round.  I usually don’t fish them under an indicator, but I always have one on my euronymphing rod.  I’m not going to lie….I’m not one to try a million different flies….when I find something that works, I tend to stick with it!  I’ve found that I mainly catch wild fish on it!  If I’m out targeting freshly stocked fish I would probably switch to one of my other go to’s I’ll tell you about in an upcoming post!  Hope this post was somewhat insightful for other beginners out there!

I think back to my first time going in the fly shop and having ZERO clue what in the world to choose….now ya know the name of one…thank me later! 😉
