Before Wicca, before modern paganism, before named traditions and religions – people across northern Europe, the British Isles, and the Northeast’s Indigenous nations were responding to the same thing: the turning of the light. The pause between decay and renewal. The threshold between what has been and what might be.

The days after the solstice were traditionally considered outside of time. Liminal corridor. Not for action – for listening, sorting, and clearing. People observed dreams, weather, animals, and emotions. No major work was done – it was a time of watching and listening.

Over the last week, I have foraged white pine needles from my walks, clipped rosemary from my indoor pots, and scooped mugwort from my summer stores. As the light takes its time to return to us, I will be sipping this tea and listening to the weather and animals around me, and my dreams and ruminations. I invite you to do the same.

I will be back in January. Until then I wish us all peace on earth and a 2026 that embraces goodwill among humankind. 💚🐦‍⬛🌲🕊️
