Tylenol in pregnancy has been everywhere in the headlines this week. Some claim it’s linked to autism. Naturally, many people may be wondering: should I skip Tylenol and just use herbs instead?

Here’s what you need to know 👇

🌿 Willow bark, meadowsweet, and wintergreen are often called “nature’s aspirin.” They contain natural compounds called salicylates that reduce pain and fever — but they also thin blood and affect pregnancy circulation. Because plant strength varies and no safety studies exist in pregnant people, these herbs are not considered safe in pregnancy.

💊 Aspirin was created by modifying those same plant compounds. It’s more predictable, but carries the same risks: increased bleeding, miscarriage early on, and late-pregnancy circulation problems for the baby. Doctors usually avoid aspirin in pregnancy unless prescribing a very low dose for certain conditions.

✨ Tylenol (acetaminophen) is different. It mainly works in the brain to lower pain and fever, without thinning the blood or irritating the stomach. Yes, it crosses the placenta — most medicines do — but decades of research have not found a proven link to autism when used as directed. That’s why major medical groups still recommend it as the safest choice for pain and fever in pregnancy.

⚖️ Takeaway: Natural doesn’t always mean safer. Herbal salicylates and aspirin carry clear risks in pregnancy. Tylenol, when used appropriately, remains the safer option. Always talk to your OB or midwife before taking any remedy.

💚 Save this post if you’re navigating pregnancy decisions, and share it with someone who’s wondering what’s safe right now.
