On the edge of SoHo, at 62 Grand Street, sits Bang Bang Tattoo—founded by Keith “Bang Bang” McCurdy, the artist who turned tattooing into a modern art form. Inside its quiet hum of machines and graphite sketches, I met Zee (Ibrahimović), known for his fine-line and black-and-grey botanical realism. He’s the kind of artist who buys fresh flowers just to study how light moves through a petal before shading it in ink.

I’d carried this image in my mind for years: a crow carrying a stem of yarrow. It felt like the meeting point of everything I am. Crows are liminal creatures—messengers between worlds, clever, sharp-eyed, unafraid of thresholds. Yarrow is their counterpart in the plant world: a healer of wounds, a protector of boundaries, the herb gifted to Achilles by the centaur Chiron to heal his soldiers on the battlefield. Its Latin name, Achillea millefolium, still carries that story.

As an herbalist and writer, my work is about discernment—knowing which stories must end, which to repeat, and which to turn into medicine. My business was built on the belief that healing begins with community and a single plant. And I call myself a witch in the old sense of the word: someone who knows the plants of her region intimately enough to help others remember how to heal.

Yesterday, in Zee’s studio, that vision came to life. We sat together, sketching from a crow I’ve met before and yarrow from my own garden. Patiently, he brought the image into being—inked proof that art, like medicine, begins at the threshold.
