In honor of our LGBTQ+ friends, family, and community, we offer a bouquet of medicinal plants that remind us: gender in nature has always been fluid.

Nature doesn’t just “tolerate” diversity—it thrives because of it. Across ecosystems, queerness shows up in stunning, life-affirming ways—as fluid sex expression, asexual reproduction, intersex bodies, and more.

Here are 3 medicinal plants that reflect queerness biologically—not symbolically, but literally:

🌿 Nettle (Urtica dioica) — Dioecious in some places, monoecious or intersex in others. Nettles shift sexual expression by population and region.
🌼 Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) — Many reproduce asexually, with entire colonies of clonal, self-seeding plants. No partner required.
🌸 Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) — Has bisexual flowers that self- and cross-pollinate. Neither male nor female: it’s both.

And 3 that speak to queerness and fluidity symbolically through their uses and lore:

🩵 Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) — Protector of boundary crossers, dreamers, witches, and gender-nonconforming folks across cultures.
❤️‍🔥 Black Cohosh (Actaea racemosa) — A powerful ally in hormonal transitions, from menopause to gender-affirming care.
💜 Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) — With flamboyant, androgynous flowers, it invites calm and queer joy in equal measure.
