Story Time from the halls of Daulat Ram College

Flashback to 2011, folks. I had just waltzed into Delhi University’s North Campus, specifically Daulat Ram College, with a grin that could rival the Cheshire Cat’s. Why? Because I had just checked off my ultimate teenage dream. 

Oh yes, the excitement was real. But then came the mandatory rite of passage—the hostel ragging session. And let me tell you, this wasn’t just any hostel. We’re talking posh, darling. The kind where the ladies dripped generational wealth and hailed from places like Delhi NCR, Punjab, Chandigarh, and other metro cities. And then there was me. 

The inevitable question popped up: “Where are you from?” 

With all the pride of a hometown hero, I said, “Ranchi.” And what did I get in return? A bunch of blank stares that could rival a deer caught in headlights. I kid you not, this was pre-Dhoni days, so Ranchi might as well have been Narnia. One girl even went so far as to ask, “Ranchi? You mean Karachi? You’re from Pakistan?” Yes, darling, because clearly, geography is just a suggestion, right?

But wait, there’s more. The initiation wasn’t complete without a little entertainment. And what could be better than making the “Ranchi girl” and her friend from Patna dance to—wait for it—“Lollipop.” Because in their glittering, sheltered worlds, that’s what Biharis were: Bhojpuri songs, rickshaw wallas, Mukherjee Nagar UPSC aspirants, and the occasional meme-worthy politician like Lalu Yadav. I was honestly too dumbstruck to do anything but go along with it. So dance, we did. Because, well, why not?

Fast forward to 2024, and guess what? Ranchi’s got its own star, and the world knows it now—thank you, Mahi bhaiya 🇮🇳 

To the folks who still think Biharis are just UPSC aspirants, politicians, or as amazing as ravishndtv Sir —sweeties, get a grip. We’re out here, educated, creative, and crushing it in our fields. While you’re busy riding daddy’s money to become “entrepreneurs,” we’re climbing the ladder with nothing but our grit and hustle.

So maybe start showing some respect, because tomorrow’s boss might just be that #Bihari you once underestimated.
