🌿 WILD GERANIUM: A Woodland First Aid Ally.

Wild geranium—or cranesbill—is blooming right now in New England woods and, if you’re lucky, in your garden. Its soft pink flowers and deeply lobed leaves are easy to spot this time of year…but the season is fleeting.

Traditionally, it’s the root that carries the strongest medicine—rich in tannins that tighten tissues, calm irritation, and help stop minor bleeding, making it an incredible ally for gum health.

🌱 Trailside Tip
Out on a hike and forgot your first aid kit? Wild geranium root can be chewed or mashed into a poultice to help slow bleeding, soothe mouth sores, or even ease diarrhea. It’s one of those plants worth learning to recognize—you never know when it might come in handy.

🦷✨ Fresh Herbal Mouth Rinse Recipe
Blend wild geranium root, sage, thyme, and calendula for a rinse that supports gum health, fresh breath, and tissue repair.

🌿 Recipe
1–2 tbsp fresh sage
1–2 tbsp fresh thyme
1 tbsp chopped wild geranium root (or leaves)
1–2 tbsp fresh calendula petals
1 cup water
Optional: 1–2 tbsp vegetable glycerin

🧑‍🍳 How to Make
Simmer cranesbill root in 1 cup water for 10–15 min.
Remove from heat, add sage, thyme, and calendula.
Cover, steep 15–20 min, strain, cool.
Add glycerin if using.
Refrigerate, use within 3–5 days.
🥄 How to Use
Swish 1–2 tbsp for 30–60 sec, spit out.
Use up to 4x daily.

🌸 Why It Works
Wild Geranium: tones & soothes gums
Sage: fights bacteria, freshens breath
Thyme: fights bacteria & biofilm
Calendula: soothes & repairs tissue

🕵️‍♀️ ID’ing Cranesbill: Check that the leaves are soft-edged, deeply lobed, and shaped like an open hand. Look for small pinkish-purple, five-petaled flowers blooming in late spring. Early summer, spot long, beak-like seed pods that look like a crane’s bill.
