Since we are talking about rape culture in the country, and since every #YesAllWomen in India 🇮🇳 are triggered and enraged beyond a point right now, let’s go back a little. 

The 2012 Delhi gang rape and murder incident, commonly known as the Nirbhaya case, when Jyoti Singh, a 22-year-old physiotherapy intern, was beaten, gang-raped, and tortured in a private bus in which she was travelling with her male friend. 

Her name was Jyoti btw, not Nirbhaya. No woman in the country can ever be “Nirbhaya”. Nirbhaya means without fear. Sorry, none of us are without fear here. 

Anyway, as a media student in Delhi, I did join the protests because I was disgusted and enraged. I was 19 then. A 19 year old girl, who witnessed men touching women inappropriately IN THE PROTESTS. I was with two of my male friends fortunately, so I wasn’t touched by the protesters. But wait. The police, the state’s favorite first move, was to lathi-charge, and since we were extremely close to the Rashtrapati Bhawan, I did get hit, and my slippers broke and we had to run and all that chaos. I was 19 then. I am thirty one today. Nothing has changed STILL. 

So please don’t come at me with the #NotAllMen nonsense and say that things have changed. A senior at my job had once said to me, Damini, if you have the chance and resources to leave this country, just leave. And leave I did. And now, I advise everyone, especially younger women, if you have the chance and resources to leave, please just leave. 

Nothing is going to change. It doesn’t matter which party is in power or how many women hold positions in the cabinet. The harsh truth is that as long as the deep-rooted mindset of men in this country remains unchanged, nothing will improve. And when I say men, I mean all men—regardless of their education, wealth, or status. The problem isn’t one of power or politics; it’s the monstrous behavior that persists across society.
