I almost never reach for fever breakers. Like many herbalists, I deeply respect the fever process—how the body raises heat to fight off viruses. If a fever is tolerable, I let it run its course and support the body with rest, hydration, herbs, and care.

But tonight was different.

My son came down hard with Influenza A. His fever lingered at 103.7°F. We did the usual: cool baths, fluids, tisanes, massages, naps. But after hours of crying, aches, and some hallubicatory daydreams—I knew it was time to give him deeper relief.

I reached for a plant I rarely use but deeply respect: Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum).

This bitter, powerful herb was once used for “breakbone fever” (dengue), not because it mends bones, but because it soothes those bone-deep aches and chills. It’s a diaphoretic, helping the body sweat out a fever, and has long been used for flu, colds, and body pain.

I gave him a small dose of tincture I’d made from the flowering tops I harvested last summer. Within 10 minutes, his fever broke. It was wild to witness. I knew it wouldn’t last but it gave us a few hours of peace— enough for him to regain his energy, drink a smoothie and fall asleep peacefully. He woke up in the middle of the night with a low fever and this morning is fever free. (In a subsequent post I’ll fill you in on the herbs I used to support his immune system, to offer some sedation, and to ease pain.)

Boneset is potent and should be used wisely. It contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which can be hepatotoxic in high doses or long-term use. It’s not for pregnant or nursing folks, and not a daily tonic. But when nothing else touches the discomfort, it can be gold.

Research backs this approach to fever: when safe, letting a fever run can support immune function. (Here’s a study). But sometimes, the moment calls for intervention. And tonight, it did.
