1,000 years ago, the mystic, herbalist, abbess, and theologian Hildegard von Bingen often transcribed divine remedies in states of deep spiritual reverie.
In one of these moments, she recorded a recipe for what she called Heart Wine—a blend of red wine, rose petals, cinnamon, and clove to ease melancholy, a common affliction in the medieval world.
It described emotional and physical coldness—what we might now call chronic sadness, grief, or even seasonal affective disorder.
Each ingredient served a purpose: rose to gladden the heart, cinnamon to warm the blood, and clove to invigorate the spirit.
These same herbs are now recognized for supporting mood, circulation, and the nervous system.
Hildegard was one of the first women we know of to write a complete text on plant medicine—and one of the only women of her era whose medical work was preserved under her own name.
Towards the end of her life, a painting was commissioned of her in mid thought, receiving a similar divine insight as Heart Wine.
At the time, it was unthinkable that a woman would be depicted reading, writing, and receiving divine insight—hinting at how revered she was.
And yet, she was all of it.
