Join us for the opening of “Tierra Retumbante” (Rumbling Earth) December 1st, a powerful solo exhibition by Nicaraguan performance artist ELYLA, marking their first solo exhibition in the US. Elyla’s exhibit will be centered around their new video installation piece alongside hand made sculpture and photography. 
For over a decade, Elyla has critically examined the myth of the “Nicaragua Mestiza”, a supposed homogeneous national identity that erases multicultural differences and shapes the self-perception of dominant populations in Central and Pacific Nicaragua. Through this personal inquiry, ELYLA unravels collective memories, revalidates dissident subjectivities, and redefines the body as a dynamic space of identity.

ELYLA (b. 1989, Chontales, Nicaragua) is a performance artist and activist. Their work has been exhibited recently at the 60th Venice Biennale, Toronto Art Biennale 2024, the XII Biennial of Havana, the IX/X Biennial of Nicaragua, IX/X Central American Biennials. Currently based between Basel, Switzerland, and Masaya, Nicaragua.
